I still remember the first time I saw a comic book character come to life on the big screen. It was in the late 70's when Christopher Reeve played Superman. I was so in awe at how real it looked to me. (well, compared to the Superman I saw in reruns from that series from the 50's and let's not even talk about the Batman from the 60's ;) ).
After that, a lot of superhero movies tried but failed to capture that moment of awe. A few came close, but none could really until... "Iron Man". Finally we had a (half way) believable character that didn't stray too far from the source material that you could no longer associate the film with the comic book. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (or MCU for short) was born.In the last 12 years, the MCU has continued to expand, building the storyline in phases.
When the Infinity War was announced and Marvel reclaimed the Fantastic Four and the X-men, I hoped that this would be the spark to launch the Secret Wars. That maybe when Thanos used the Infinity Gauntlet this would rip the fabric of time and space. Introduce parallel universes, explaining why we the Avengers never heard of the X-Men. And maybe this event drew the attention of the Beyonder (An omnipotent being, who in the comic book series, pulled all the heroes and all the villains together on one planet promising the victors anything they could imagine.)
The Secret Wars not only pitted heroes against villains but also X-Men against Avengers. But for me any way even more importantly, introduced Spider-Man to the symbiote which would later become Venom.
But unfortunately it seems this will not come to be. Disney's Marvel has decided on a different direction. The more I hear about their future plans for the franchise, the more I get the feeling that "Endgame" is really that - it's over. I hope I'm wrong. Any way, it was fun while it lasted.
